How does New Balance's numbering system work? Are all 700s, for example, a specific type of running shoe?

I know New Balance has a different number for each model and that they produce shoes of all shapes and sizes. I was wondering whether 700s are meant for one thing and 300s were meant for another, etc. Or maybe the numbering system is just random? Can anyone help me out?

Thanks!|||They inititally just pick a number and the next shoe in that series or it's replacement has a higher number.

If you want a particular running shoe, just go to the New Balance website and click on which type you want and it will find it for you. http://www.newbalance.com|||My podiatrist said the higher the number the better the support. He said anything below 700 is junk, no support.

|||I always thought it was related to the retail price. The higher the price, the higher the number.
