Why is it important to balance the requirements of legislation with the needs and objectives of a company?

came across this question as part of a business course and don't understand it. How can you balance the requirements of the law with your company's objectives ? Surely the law is non negotiable and should be the minimum standard / objective. How do you balance it ?|||The law is negotiable. Have you not heard of the way that companies balance the cost of litigation against illegal practices (i.e. Profit Maximisation against Legislative Requirements)? Remember what Edward Norton's job was in Fight Club? It all comes down to the cash equation.
